hello there. so i live in a totally forsaken area in Michigan with no record stores to speak of, and needless to say i despreately want to hear the new of montreal album. Normally i would go straight for the internet but i am going on a trip in a day or so and will have access to big chain stores i.e. Bestbuy, barnes and noble, fye, etc... in the past i would not have considered looking, but i have no idea what kind of distribution polyvinyl has, and i thought i might get lucky and score a copy in a store so i don't have to sweat the week of shipping... so from your professional opinions should i give it a shot or just stick to the e commerce?

well i mean i think it would be a better personal decision to direct your money to somewhere that isn't best buy, ya know? even if they had it, would you want to support them? i browsed a fye in a mall recently and they had shit for selection. the only e6 thing i saw in the store was a copy of beulah's "the coast is never clear." they didn't even have a single thing by the apples. but if you can avoid it, don't support mainstream stores.

A couple of WEEKS? Wow, if I had to wait for a mainstream record store to get an album to me, I'd bypass them and get it online.

the problem with small record stores is that, in oklahoma at least, never have the release on the day it comes out. Best Buy does. even though i hate throwing money down the big corporate monster's throat, if no one else has it on release date, of course I will buy it there. doesn't the money go to the band either way? And anyway, OM will get way more exposure at BB than at your favorite hip record store. I know that 75-80% of you want to keep OM all to yourself, but its inevitable, especially with a band this good, that they will break, at least to some extent. face it. I hate it as much as you do, but you can't let your personal connection with the band interfere with their success. now I am ranting.

"doesn't the money go to the band either way?"

Ha. I think the question is probably "doesn't the money NOT go to the band either way?" but I'd guess they probably make a couple bucks per sale from the copies they have on tour.

I'm curious to know how this breaks down if any of you band members are reading.

i was commenting on supporting a business like best buy or (gasp!) walmart, not commenting on the mainstream success of the band. no, very little money goes to the band. part of me wants to rip all my music illegally and then mail the cash i would have spent to the bands i own the CD's for. they'd make infinitely more profit that way, even if i sent them "only" $8 or so per album release.

sunlandic twins should make of montreal more of a household name in the younger indie rock circles, especially judging by the turnouts at the athens and atlanta shows.

this should be a very very good thing. in theory. out with all the old OM-bashing dinosaurs who can't keep up with great bands that perservere and in with the optimistic music fans with their new ears that do appear.
