-it is their best album (as determined by the amount of 5-star ratings in my iTunes... scoring 10, 5-star songs).
-in second place is The Gay Parade (scoring 8, 5-star songs).
-and in third, If He Is Protecting Our Nation Then Who Will Protect Big Oil, Our Children? (this was tied with Gay Parade at 7, 5-star songs, until I was able to get "A collection of poems about water" on MP3... don't worry I own all of the albums on either vinyl or CD... except Horse and Elephant Eatery, which I must own on vinyl).
ther were numerous honorable mentions, as you might have guessed.
-Bedside Drama clocks in at 6, 5-star songs.
-Aldhil, The Bird Who and The Sulandic Bonus EP all are tied at 4, 5-star songs.
-satanic panic earns a second class honorable mention for scoring 8, 4-star songs, trailed by the singles and songles album with 6, 4-star songs.
-for the record... Cherry Peel has 9, 3-star songs. It is currently being reviewed.

That is a very flawed rating system.
You can't say that Coquelicot is the best because it has the most 5-star songs... after all, there's like a million more songs on Coquelicot than the Gay Parade.
If you want a truly accurate rating system based solely on the ratings of songs, you must rate each song, and determine the average rating. That would be the rating for the CD.

3 stars for the cherry peel songs!?

I'd agree that only a handful of Cherry Peel songs would be 5, but the album as a whole hardly has anything less than a 4.
However, Bedside Drama has three 5s, and the rest are 3s.
Gay Parade is nearly all 5s, except for maybe the march which gets a bit grating. Coquelicot has a few 5s, a few 4s, and some 2 and 3s.
Aldhils has one or two 5s, and a lot of 2s.
Satanic Panic has a lot of 3s and 4s, and no 5s.
The Sunlandic Twins has a lot of 3s, a few 4s, and no 5s.

this post is so gay

exactly. thats the point. "...in your life, the moments of gaiety are too few..."
this post has great potential to be the most exciting debate of the new century.
anyway,
I think the rating system isn't terribly flawed. our opinions may differ on the tally of stars, per/song. But I think there might be room for improvement. Obviously the overall total of stars is what counts. the descrepancy is over the # of songs per/album. thats why its best to vote on the number of highest scoring songs per/album.
-coquelicot has (as I get out my calculator) 89 stars out of a possible 110... thats roughly 81%. now granted, there are more songs, but 10 of those songs are 5 star songs! not bad. if the album had 10 songs (or 14 songs... the average per/OM album) that definitely wouldn't be an unfair advantage.
-the gay parade has 69 stars out of a possible 80. Oh shit! that is about 86%. we might have an upset.
-the bird has 33 out of 40. that is 82%!!! I'm feeling faint. this system changes everything.
-the big oil album has 51 out of 65. that is a strong 78%.
-SPITA has 56 out of 70. 80% (bonus songs not included)
-aldhils, 53 out of 70. 75%
-singles and songles, 51 out of 70. 72%
-bedside drama, 64 out of 80. 80%
-cherry peel, 47 out of 70. 67%
-early 4-tracks, 47 out of 80. almost 59%
-sunlandic twins, 45 out of 65. 69% (the bonus ep is 20 out of 20... the only 100%!!!)

The melodies on the bonus EP aren't very good.
Do you guys really think that March of the Gay Parade deserves the exact same reating as My Favorite Boxer and Jacques Lamure?

yes. what is your favorite?
welcome to the site.
if they trimmed coquelicot down to like 40 minutes it could easily be their best

I think coquelicot is the best. It was the first album of theirs that I heard. The production on it is better than the other albums. the gay parade was amazing, but at times, its muddied up by all the goings on. don't get me wrong. I love the gay parade. If I was to go by my revised system of ratings, it would be the winner. I just think coquelicot wins on principal.
Coquelicot is just one of those albums that rarely comes along. It's got a real ebb and flow. There are some dull moments, but overall it's mindblowing. Just listen to "go call you mine". Every bar is a different instrument in the melody. The arrangements on all of the songs are unique and fitting to the tune.
the song-writing is at its sharpest, catchiest and most playful ("good morning mr. edminton" is the perfect representation for the album and does what, in my opinion, the best songs should do. it creates an atmosphere (see also....butterscotching mr. lynn), tells a story (see...The Events Leading Up To The Collapse Of Detective Dulllight), catches you with a hook (see... hello from inside a shell) and plays on your expectations while giving you something you haven't heard before (see...penelope). I also like the instrumentals on coquelicot (I've missed their instrumentals, I'm glad the new one has a couple).
it's a great concept album and it's psych-outs and lyrics are incredible (peacock parisols).
I don't know. all of the songs fit together and create an audio landscape in a way very few albums do. It is unbelieveably planned out. In my opinion it fully realizes a vision and executes it in such a way that the method does not distract from the content.
Its debatable that this album contains few "personal" songs, but to me, a real sense of emotion is communicated trough the absurdity and the characterizations.
the musicianship is at its best on this album as well. just listen to the guitars on "rose robert" and "lets go for a walk". or the bass on "frozen island" or any of the other songs, for that matter. DON'T FORGET THE PIANO! "Hopless opus" is entirely excessive, but it still is amazing. "its just so" is a good one, too.
the cellos are great on this album, as are the vocal harmonies. Everything is well recorded.
I could go on forever.
Anyway, kevin almost blew his load on this one. I'm shocked that he didn't.
btw
I love the big oil album. even if it's sort of a comp.
It has a few of my favorite songs (There Is Nothing Wrong With Hating Rock Critics is possibly my all time fave, Inside A Room Full Of Treasures A Black Pygmy Horse's Head Pops Up Like A Periscope, An Ill-Treated Hiccup).
My, What A Strange Day With A Swede and Girl From NYC(named Julia) are both incredible. So is Maple Liccorice.

yeah big oil is really rough, i don't really count it as an album....i only really have it because it's sort of a hardcore fan thing. i haven't listened to it a lot. i love coquelicot though. every bit of it. it took me a while before i actually listened to the hopeless opus but there really is not one track i don't like. coquelicot and gay parade are just about tied for me, with coquelicot, at the moment, a little bit higher. i don't have actual ratings because i think that's kind of pointless, to go through and rate all my songs to see how i REALLY feel.. or something.
i would say their worst is big oil, but if you weren't counting that... aldhils arboretum. that one is a little too slick for me sometimes. i haven't listened to it since i got it.

hated it I think I sort of agree with you, at one time I thought coquelicot was the best shit ever, but then it got repetitive, and it wasnt as fun as the others, I agree that gay parade is great, but coquelicot doesnt cut it, I think a lot of people put it as their favorite album, because thats what other people say, I dont know, whateverpfffjuftpea

the sunlandic ep is twice as good as the album. I'm sorry if you think otherwise. Its not too late to seek help, however.
