anyone got dirt on why he isn't w/ OM any more?
I know he really hasn't played with them since aldhil's, but I've always wanted to know why. Who's got the dirt?
I haven't asked until now, because I was afraid it was a touchy subject.
whatever happened, he is one of the best bass players in the world.
It makes me think of that Kids In The Hall skectch...
this one's for you Derek.
Bass Player

Transcribed from: Comedy Central
Transcribed by both: KdsInThHal@aol.com and I Hecubus@aol.com
[Opens with Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet playing music, Bruce McCulloch sitting in a chair playing bass. Kevin McDonald appears from behind Bruce]

Kevin: That's the best bass player I ever heard. He's playin' so sweet, I'm gettin' chubby. You know what I like best about the bass player? His neck.

[Bruce bobs his head a few times]

Kevin: Oh, he made a little mistake. You may not have noticed it, but if you did, I think you'll enjoy my tale. Hmmm....

[Singing:] The mother, the father, the serpent, the priest. The foreman, the woman, the widow, the beast.

Hey, bass player. Look at the bass player. Look at that smile, there's sadness in that smile. Look at that chord structure, there's sadness in that chord structure. Look at him flail like the wailin' wall with nothin' but stubby fingers and a dumb look on his face. He don't know it but he's balding...spiritually. But everybody hates the bass player. No one invites the bass player to the party after the show.

Bruce: Hey, what are you guys doin' after the show? Oh, nothin'? Okay.

Kevin: If he does go to the party, he can only get the good looking girl's... best friend.

Bruce: Is Heather coming?

Kevin: [laughing] Heather...The bass player is the loser of the band, yes he is, if you don't believe me take a look at the one you're with. But, there's something beautiful about the bass, sometimes when I listen to it, I--I don't know, I get caught up in the swirl, I'm flying, I'm flying Ma, over a big beautiful lake. He's playing the bass and I'm flying. Sometimes when I land I'm in a different neighborhood, but that's okay, 'cause whenever I listen to the bass player, I always bring cab fare. But after all, aren't we all bass players? Aren't you all bass players? They told me this was a bass players convention, you are all bass... Pick up the beat, pick up the beat. Hide the sadness, and tap your feet.

Singing: The mother, the father, the serpent, the priest. The foreman, the woman, the widow, the beast. Aren't you glad that you're not one?

[Kevin hides behind Bruce's chair and SMOASP begin playing once again]

Well what happened is in the past, i can tell you though that Derek is now playing the drums in the 63 Crayons, and he is working on a record of his own songs. He's also a real nice guy, and he knows a lot about coffee.

My impression had been that he left to concentrate on producing records and whatnot.

I do love those 63 Crayons though.

he is actually playing in six bands
the instruments
63 crayons
marshmallow coast
circulatory system
his own solo work
and one other band but i dont remember which one.
also producing other bands.

Yeah i didn't mention the other bands, as he'd been in them for awhile, but I heard that Heather M is moving to NYC, so the Instruments I guess will have new members, or take on a very long distance style band set up. Mike

I also love pbr, but I'm trying not to drink right now. What are some fun facts about the rest of the folks posting on this thread. Mike

sad to hear it, but we are still confirming bands, the headliner slots are all being worked out now. so there are 5 regular bands still to confirm and 3 headliners and 3 co-headliners. If we get all the bands we really want, then I doubt you'll stay at home. It's going to be sweet. Mike

03-31-2005, 01:16 PM
another thing, is all of this going to be all ages??

hhbtmike
03-31-2005, 05:49 PM
it isn't all ages, but you can get in with an adult or guardian. boyracer won't be touring at that time, dear nora said no, the crabs aren't going out on the road, rocketship, never a fan of, and tullycraft is looking into it, but once we anounce the full line up, it will be grand. Mike

man, i won't have a guardian to go with. i'll be going with some friends, but if two of my friends are 18, can i say they're my parents?

if you get up with me, or we can meet before the show, i'll make sure you get in, so don't worry. Mike

I want to listen to 63 Crayons, but there's no MP3s on their site, and it's impossible to even find one. They aren't even listed on allmusic.com, or no other site, as far as I can tell.

I'm not the kind of person who buys music without hearing at least a small clip of a song or two.

What a shame.

HHBTM has a song or two to hear. 63 Crayons are like a very poppy. Like The Apples on speed with a small twist of madness.

derek was awesome. when i drove from detroit to chicago to see them in may 2001, i got the entire band (besides mr. higgins) to autograph my "coquelicot" cd. derek was very nice and sounded very appreciative that i would drive so far to see them. he told me how its been very difficult to plan something in michigan. andy was also nice, as was dottie. even kevin surprised me by keeping the conversation going while most other people would run away. i got mr. higgins to sign my cd in columbus. he was by far the rudest member of the group. acting very "i'm sweet." after 3-4 road trips, they decided to start adding michigan to their tours now on a regular basis.

go to www.hhbtm.com then go to the extras page, there are songs by the crayons on there. all hhbtm sites are getting a huge upgrade in the end of april. video / audio / photos, just getting all the bands to aprove which ones will be going up. also there will be a live 365 station featuring over 6 hours of music from hhbtm, slumberland , microindie, and drive in records. Mike

jefferoo, thank you for that "kids" tribute, i love it.

as for dirt, i don't really think there's too much to say. just the normal stuff of being in a band for 7 years in your impressionable and ego-centric twenties, being in a romantic relationship with a bandmember that ends, wanting to work on your own art rather than filtering it through someone else's rather developed and specialized vision... etc.. it doesn't feel like dirt, just normal life stuff.

i really love the band, and one of the beautiful things about elephant six is it's "revolving door". i'll probably play with of montreal again in the future, i know i'd like too. sometimes people just need a little room to evolve.

these days i'm playing with the instruments ( new album in progress), circulatory system ( new album in progress!!!), the visitations (sometimes as an extra member), the 63 crayons (in the writing stage for a new record), pipes you see, pipes you don't ( ocassional progress), marshmallow coast ( new album in progress), and err (my own band, album in progress).

i miss seeing you guys on the road, it's strange to develop all these traveling friendships. everyone has always been very kind and hospitable towards me, i appreciate it.

Well said, Drake!
Transistions are difficult and interesting in all of their forms, and while we are all thriving in our new directions, there are times when we all miss each other--musically and personally. For my part, I find Derek (and Andy for that matter) to be peerless, and am truly glad for the times we played together.
