I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written, funny, and overall a very good read.

Beat me to it.
Personally, I'm looking forward to Tommy Lee's 'Best and Worst of Twee Pop'.

i wonder how that article came about - kevin pitched it to pitchfork with his red devil costume on i suppose. clever timing, with the new album soon to officially come out
it's hard to go wrong with early motley crue or appetite for destruction but you can't be dissin on winger that much! okay so that dude was creepy but at least they covered jimi hendrix on one of their records. the extreme song 'more than words' always makes me think of the lamo's at the pool that summer who thought they were 'deep' for knowing all the words. for fun one time i snagged that song off napster or something and added a massive amount of reverb to it in cool edit and it actually was almost pleasant, like some lost transmission from outer space.
def leopard had their share of hair metal moments in the sun and i would like to give a shout out to them. hysteria was the bomb. in 1987 i remember being really into def leopard, inxs ('kick' is still an awesome LP), bon jovi ('slippery when wet' was my first cassette) and 70s era aerosmith which still rules. and weird al. and the fat boys. cassette singles were big - skid row, slaughterhouse, ozzy with lita ford, alice cooper's 'poison' was rad. 'scared' by dangerous toys is still one of my favorite songs.
it's true that everybody took sides in the hair metal era, if for fleeting moments like when dokken was suddenly universally cool for being in nightmare on elm st III. and mtv had these 'top 10 videos' thing on like every day that everybody always talked about at school. i remember that's when 'pour some sugar on me' and '18 and life' and (later on) 'ice ice baby' took off like crazy.
anyone who hasn't seen 'this is spinal tap' (and it's outtakes) should check it out asap! :D

"rocket queen" was always my favorite GNR chewn, as well.
crazy, mad props, kev .
In my opinion:
#1 GNR
#2 GNR
#3 GNR
#4 Motley Crue
#5 Skid Row
Guns N Roses were by far the best of all of them.
Even the use youur illusion albums (i'm sorry kevin, you did not come to your senses). UYI#2 had Get In The Ring. "and in this corner, weighing in at 850 lbs, GUNS AND ROSES!"/ "printin' lies, startin' controversey. You want to antagonize me? antagonize me motherfucker! get in the ring motherfucker, and I'll kick you bitchy little ass... PUNK!". That song was genius.
So was the last track, "My World". There are moments of the new OM album that sound like that song, a little. But I think GNR has kevin beat. Sorry to say.
The programming on that song was really good. I was looking forward to GNR putting out an industrial album along those lines. It would have kept them going strong a little while longer.
2 years ago, I was at Sundance and I actually chased Slash in an airport and got his autograph (which is now framed in my bathroom). I don't think I would do that for any other celebrity.

any particular reason why it's in the bathroom of all places? somebody might be tempted to flush it down the toilet if you're not careful :P

That was a great piece... I had completely forgotten about that one! :D
Isn't it weird that every white kid goes through a metal phase between 14 and 16? I'm still amazed as a teacher to see kids with Motorhead shirts in class. It makes me very happy. They always get extra points from me.
Favorite quote : "I always felt really sorry for the kids who had to resort to Stryper because their parents were too strict. I'd hate to see where those kids are now. They're probably all dentists."

My metal phase took place around age 11 and my friends were of the skater/goth variety. I was such a strange little girl. And then around 12 my friend told me to listen to The Bird Who Continues To Eat.. and some stuff off Cherry Peel and obviously the rest is history. It was kind of a weird shift.

For me, that phase was 9-present.

Mmm, as long as you branch out and work THROUGH gateway bands (which many rarely do) it can stay.
Me, I've been on metal for 5-7 years, 2 of them have been extreme metal and supplementing with other genres.

And it's a very good one. Someone needs to ask him.

I don't think it was that weird, since I'm assuming almost everyone here has experienced the same... I was a strange girl too - that metal thing is usually a guy thing... But everyone knows I'm just a white he-she.

Haha yeah I guess my shift from the backstreet boys to metal was a little weirder. But I guess when you're around that age it's not too uncommon.

this reminded me of the time I accidentally 'met' Richie Sambora in a Secacus NJ Hotel. only not so awesome.
I loved that Mick Mars had a guitar with a woman's breasts airbrushed on it.
...although thats not quite as impressive as a penis bass guitar.

Thanks, Kev-bro, you write some good songs, too, man. But seriously, how is a dude in fishnets and Raggedy-Andy circles on his cheeks gonna say Ratt looks like the "gayest biker gang ever"? I mean, yeah, I might have blown that dude at that fairground in Sarasota, and that time in Denmark, and in Australia... but c'mon man, I was drunk and high and I didn't LOOK gay - at least I still had some biker shit going on. Damn, now I feel all weird - let's see some titties, girls, who's first?

my thoughts our irrelevant i'm sure, but i thought i should represent the other demographic who thought heavy metal music was for hyped up drunk assholes who couldn't manage their 'sensitive side' outside of materialistic hair and makeup techniques ... it's probably just a mix of ignorance and the fact i don't work well with music that makes me want to blow my brains out..
even though klosterman's book, and every piece he seems to write, is a hellofa' read
my childhood revolved around golden age hip hop, beck and the ben folds five...so naturally, i'm a giant pussy :)
the real question is...just when did kevin jump from this 'shit' to the place in his life where he quotes the beach boys 'smile sessions', zappa's 'were only in it for the money', and his addiction to the beatles?
