Since hearing them name checked in "Crayon Box" I've been meaning to check these bands out. Where should I start? Do they sound anything like the Gerbils at all or no?

Portastatic is the side project of Mac from Superchunk. You will like it if you like Superchunk.

go get freed weed by sebadoh, that's one of my favorite albums. i've yet to hear anything else by them that i like though. i could take or leave portastatic. they do have some hot hits though, and i could see how some people would love them.

Sebadoh use to be my favourite band.
They don't sound like the Gerbils at all. Check out The Freed Weed if you want an excellent collection of acoustic gems or III if you want something electric.
Great band.

if you want great portastatic you should (i hate to say) only buy the first? full length record i hope your hearts not brittle . the other stuff is o.k. but that album really sounds like no other album i ever heard even now. it was released in 1994 . it is amazing
Sebadoh anything up to and including sebadoh three and smash your head is truly workl of geniuses especially sebadoh III for POP lovers

I just saw Mr. Lou Barlow in person yesterday. I don't think I've heard Sebadoh, but I really dig the soundtrack he assembled for KIDS. Would I probably like Sebadoh?

the portastatic album from 95ish that is tan colored is really good. sort of melloish lo fi-ish pop rock, somewhat on the 90ish emotional indie side.

Sebadoh: people always talk about Sebadoh III but I find it very uneven, I'm not a fan of the Gaffney contributions, and I ended up selling my copy on Amazon. I found the band to be much more interesting when Jason Loewenstein came to the fore. I saw them play several times and it was lots of fun -- they kept switching off instruments, and Lou is hilarious of course. Anyway. I'd suggest starting with Bakesale which imo is their most exciting and propulsive album. If you like that, go backwards toward theThe Freed Weed. There are earlier releases but I don't think they ever came out on CD... Also go forward through Harmacy and The Sebadoh. I'd highly recommend The Sebadoh, btw, it's underrated but quite tasty.
Portastatic: dunno.

lol
I know, after I replied I noticed that the thread started in 2005. Sebadoh still sounds better than most of the music released today, though, so I don't care. :p

Well, sebadoh doesn't really sound like Gerbils but i don't think they're so different as it is said here, both play some kind of pop songs with 90's alternative guitars inside, even if finally, the Gerbils sound more psychedelic and folk.

Sebadoh was my gateway to e6. Way back in the day (1997?) there was a Sebadoh mailing list meetup at a NMH show in Boston. I couldn't make the show but I bought On Avery Island based on their recommendation.
Damn, I've been on the internet a long time.

my favorite sebadoh was always smash your head against a punk rock. especially that third song, which is 'circles around ruston' spelled backwards. i think lou wrote it about some freako girl from ruston when they came through.

Wow, I've been listening to that album for over a decade and I never caught that reference.
