i really like how passionate and open-minded these forums tend to be about music. that being said:
nusrat fateh ali khan sings quwwali music; it is sufi music, and sufi is the mystical branch of islam, the one you rarely--if ever--hear about.
here's what jeff buckley said about him: http://www.liquidgnome.com/JeffBuckley/nusrat.html (http://)
i first found this stuff about six or eight years ago, whatever it would be now such that i found it the year after the guy died:( i'd fess up some very serious money to be able to see him in concert today.
i love this stuff. just got off the 17 minute bender of Maki Madni. wow, feels like earth is a little different this time.
anybody--anybody at all--know this stuff? love this stuff?

My parents are from Pakistan so I had the pleasure of growing up listening to his work as well as other qawwali artists from Pakistan. Great music. Very interesting vocals.
I even saw the man live when I was like nine years old. Good times.

So I'm not the only one! I really like that stuff, but I also like long rhythmic raags and headtrips like gy!be ;)
I'm by no means expert, so if there are any other artists or Ustads(? am I using this title wrong) that you also like, don't hesitate to recommend them.

abida parveen!
she has an amazing voice. if you like nusrat's work then you should definitely get her album called "songs of the mystics" which shouldn't be hard to find
