I just wanted to share my new obsession with everybody:
http://www.audioscrobbler.com/

It's this utterly addictive plug-in (for just about any mp3 player) that keeps track of what you listen to. You can then listen to streaming radio suited to your tastes, explore users who listen to similar things, etc. What you're listening to is even available as an RSS feed! All for free!

It's about a year old but still being developed, with some exciting stuff ahead, such as weekly personal charts (i.e., "What was I listening to heavily in the third week of September?").

I'm in love with it and I just thought I'd let some other geeks in on it as well.

Gerpok is far superior.
It updates once the song is over unlike Audioscrobler, which takes a while sometimes.

Here's my gerpok account:

Gerpok looks interesting...Audioscrobbler does have some problems with updating, but data is never lost and the update always happens eventually. They're working on it. ;)

In what other ways is Gerpok superior to Audioscrobbler? I prefer Audioscrobbler because of the forums, groups, streaming radio, the huge number of players supported (I'm married to foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/)), recommendations, RSS, etc. Maybe all this is because I'm just used to Audioscrobbler though.

Well, Audioscobbler has a lot more options, and I guess it's superior in that way, but as far as updates go, Gerpok is updated right away. But I know Audiosrobbler is working on that.

Oops...sorry, sdw. :)

Audioscrobbler keeps track of all the songs you listen to (see what a profile looks like by clicking the link in my sig). It uses this information to compile your "top artists," "top songs," as well as Audioscrobbler-wide charts (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/charts/). In the future they plan to implement personal weekly charts. These features are merely to satisfy a sick curiosity.

It also uses these statistics to link you to people with similar musical tastes, as well as recommend music to you (although this feature, like many, is still buggy). Audioscrobbler is also in cahoots with last.fm (http://www.last.fm/), which provides personalized streaming music based on your taste, or on the taste of any other Audioscrobbler listener (it's a little more complicated than that when you consider subscription advantages, too, but that's the gist).

It also turns your listening history into an RSS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28protocol%29) feed, so that this information can be syndicated on blogs (and potentially employed in more useful ways).

Truthfully it's not life-altering, but it's a fun, addictive, geeky hobby. Give it a shot, you might be surprised at how exciting it is to see the song you're listening to appear on your profile page, and find out just how often you really listen to certain things. Plus it's got a nice voyeuristic aspect to it, in browsing other people's profiles. Oh, plus it can show you the "biggest fans" of certain artists, calculated by how many times they've listened to them. I'll shut up now.
