I too would like to order this album but for some reason ( and usually this dosen't stop me) but I have heard such varying comments regarding it.
is it basically studio wanking by the said performers or is there actual substance of quality

It has patches of brilliance in it, and I wish the Athens folks would put out more albums like it. It's collaborative by nature, a project passed among different Athens bands as an experiment. It has a warm, let's-make-something-special-whether-or-not-anyone-likes-it feel. It feels like the last true Elephant 6 album. And everyone on these boards seems to hate it, which is depressing and which is probably why we're not going to get a sequel.

If you like the Music Tapes and the more experimental Olivia Tremor Control stuff, you might like it. It's a few songs and some noise and some weird things. Personally I think it's full of charm, and I enjoy listening to it.

I love Major Organ, as long as I'm in the right mood. It seems like a holiday album to me.

I like it for what it is. Buried in the 'songs' you can hear strokes of Of Montreal, Music Tapes, NMH, and some OTC. I don't listen to it often, but I'm glad its there.

I like it, because it's like a big Elephant 6 Family Album.

Everyone always goes on about Jeff Mangum's input on this record, but there's so many points on this record where you just hear a vocal and just think 'Wow, that's Kevin Barnes!/Julian Koster!/Andrew Reiger!' etc etc etc. Sure, it's hardly a clear indie-pop masterpiece, but then, at no point does it try to be so.

And I do really like 'Water Dripping on Bread Makes Bread Taste Not So Tasty.'

I've heard so many bad things about it, that I stopped wanting to hear it. But now I want to again.

Definitely buy it. Half-handed does not really like sound-collage/experimental/musique concrete...so don't listen to his opinion. It's pretty exciting, as far as silly albums go.

Right, I have always been a staunch supporter of the album, however I do find myself skipping tracks (which is of course heresy). Sometimes its too much, but sometimes... O man its unbelievable.

Speaking of sound collages Ive always assumed that Major Organ was simply a lighter poppier version of Frosted Ambassador or Black Swan Network... is this true?

major organ is silly. i would call it self-indulgent (not that thats bad), rather than innovative or experimental or anything. its pretty frightening though.

black swan network is great..

Frosted Ambassadors and the Black Swan Network are a lot more ambient. The Major Organ album is just a lot of fractured sounds, but there are a few tunes in there ie. verse/chorus/verse arrangements. It's a pretty decent record though. Get alone just for "Barry's Lung".

I personally like it alot; it's...different. You have to be in the right mood for it. I kind of view it as the follow up album to "1st Imaginary Symphony for Noman". I hear a lot more of Julian Koster in there then I do Jeff or Kevin.

It's quite a good album in my opinion. But you do have to be in the right mood.

On weekends I like to blare "Life Form (Transmission Received)" from my car stereo and climb trees at breakneck pace, leaping from limb to limb and hoping for a parachute appendage to finally sprout from my back.
