olivia tremor control is maybe the best and worst thing that happened to me. they're my favorite band but i keep looking for bands that sound similar and can't. i think this has been brought up before and i've checked out some of the suggestions but none came close. who would you say comes closest. i actually played my copy of the notorious byrd brothers for the first time in a long time and that has a ton of olivia similarities. but i want more. anyone? also, does anyone know of anywheres i can get a copy of the peel sessions on the i net? much appreciated.

I really like the soft machine , recently I purchased a reissue of their first two albums "Volume 1 and 2" and I love them.
As far as concrete similarities go not many. ie no soaring harmonies and fairly standard instrumentation , by OTC standards.
But they were wildly experimental Rock and roll band.
Awesome druming, quirky lyrics, reacurring off beat themes and long excursions in ambience . If you haven't heard of them get a hold of these two albums. If you do know of them listen to them again.
They were a late 60's band from England. Apperently they toured heaps with Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix Experience.

the exact same thing happened to me with neutral milk hotel. OTC and NHM are nothing alike though, as you probably know. I eventually grew out of it. I can appreciate most music now. For a while NMH was a kind of devine experience. Nothing did come close. Circulatory System basically is OTC minus a few members. It's darker, and more deceptive. Check them out. Their only album isn't as complete as Dusk though. Dusk is just one hunk of musical enlightenment.

yeah i've got all of bill and will's other projects, but it never occured to me to pick up pete's. so i did. and it's really really awesome and just about what i was looking for. i heard a couple of clips from dungen and they sounded really good, however their new album is pretty damn expensive. if anyone knows of somewheres i can get a cheaper copy (cheaper than 21 dollars plus shipping) let me know.
Pitchfork compared Dungen to OTC and that's why I bought the album ($20 at Other Music in NYC - the last copy), but I don't really see the similarities. I love the album though, and without thinking too much about it, it may be my favorite album since Black Foliage.
I too have always longed for something that sound like OTC - I love CS and, after having seen them on their last "tour," am very excited about their new album b/c I really liked all the new songs I heard. So whenever that album comes out (i guess next year at this point), we'll have some more goodies to dig through. They did release one track from the album on the for-charity Amos House Collection, Vol. 3. I like the track, but it seems to be more of a minor element to the album given its brevity and the fact that CS didn't play it live.
Soft Machine is great. I actually like the third album the most, but One and Two are more in the Psych-Pop/Rock style of the late 60s. Tracing their roots you find the Wilde Flowers who, like SM, were driven by Robert Wyatt's unqiue (not great, but emotional certainly) voice and his keen and attentive drumming. SM's 1 and 2 and the Wilde Flowers' compilation (they didn't release an album) are most relevant, I think, to E6 fans. Caravan, also part of the Canterbury scene, would also be of interest - I have their s/t first album and In the Land of Grey and Pink - both fine and I'm looking for more.
Finally, what's Pete's album? And who are the notorious byrd brothers?

one of the closest things that I found that compares to something like otc (psych-pop harmonies) is The Fraternal Order of the All cd titled "Greetings from Planet Love" you can listen to samples of the cd on Amazon.com. The cd is more of a 60's psych pop album than your otc cd, but there is a good mixture of harmony, sounds, and psychedelia. Listen to "love tonight" or "chasing my tail" or any other songs and you'll get the vibe.

pete's band is pipes you see pipes you don't. individualized shirts is the album i just got and fell in love with. the notorious byrd brothers is an album by the byrds. extremely otc'ish. like i say probably the closest i've heard. at least a few of the songs, some are just pure byrd goodness definitely worth owning.

Ah, right. I never imported the album into my itunes so i sorta forgot about it. I seem to remember not being too impressed on first listen, but I need to give it more of a chance.
