Maybe I've been living in utter ignorance, but this band chose their name from an uprising in Russia, the common men fighting for human rights! All this time I thought their name was lame, here is a link to read all about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decembrist_Revolt

Delusions of Adequacy: Thanks for sitting down with us, the show was amazing. First, the name: were you inspired by the Russian revolutionary group The Decembrists?
Rachel Blumberg: Yes.
DOA: Why do you spell it differently, with the “e?
RB: Well, it was inspired by the revolutionary group, but it’s also sort of an nod to the month of December, and the idea of turning inward during the dark months. And that’s why we chose that spelling.
Yep.
Hopefully I'll be seeing them on the 26th...my favorite band to have started in the last 4 years I'd say...

They also spelled it differently and partly chose it due to the mood associated with the month of December.

they were playing in my town tonight, but I couldn't go. because at the very same time was a benefit for Free Radio Burlington, which I played at.
But that was fun to do anyway. I videotaped the other acts, as well as a few months ago I taped the late bp helium's set at the Happy Happy Birthday to Me popfest.
someone really should take all these spiffy things I videotape and host them somewhere, because I don't have anyplace to do it.

i personally think their two full lengths are hit and miss, with the hot hits being extremely hot and the others being sort of bland. but with the tain comes extreme promise of it all coming together for these folks. the tain is easily the best thing they've done, and their live shows are really something else.
i was going to see them on their recent mini-tour of the uk. but it was a private show and i couldn't get tickets.
they premiered stuff from their impending new album on those dates, apparently, which makes me sad.

At their worst they're bland, at their best...I listen....

What is bland about the Decemberists? I think that's the last adjective I'd choose. Even the songs I don't like of theirs (which are, admittedly, few) are at least interesting, challenging, or weird.

Weird? I think not...to rephrase I think a lot of people could possibly find them bland, I don't think they are the most eccentric band out there, not by a long shot...there are some weird f-ing bands, the Decemberists are not. I think they are unique though.

their songs aren't lacking in flavour or character, its just that they don't spark much emotion in me.. and colin meloy's vocals are a bit bored. maybe they translate well on stage, but i haven't seen the decemberists live.
some songs are lovely, like "here i dreamt i was an architect" and "leslie" LOVELY.

i love squeaky voices from my singers like kevin barnes, julian koster, etc but colin meloy sometimes is a bit too squeaky whiny and fruity. some of their songs just sound like something you'd hear on the radio, very straightforward and sort of bland. why am i bad mouthing them? i really like them, but not every single thing they do. really though, their good songs blow me away and their live performance is really really amazing. those songs that i considered boring and bland turned into awesome and exciting. but then went back to boring and bland on cd.

What's your favorite song Half-Handed?
I like very much Myla Goldberg.
A friend of mine saw them in England, and found them really excellent on stage, with a lot of energy, enthusiastics persons.
I long for seeing them in Paris.

The Tain! (I think it counts as one song.) That was amazing live too.

when colin jumps behind the drums for the third part of the tain, that really makes me feel good inside.

The only Decemberists songs I could really say I'm not in love with would be Architect and Cocoon. Chimbley Sweep is actually my favourite, and was wonderful live. But I often find that songs I don't like on record end up being wonderful live (see: Define A Transparent Dream, which from every bootleg I've heard, sounds amazing, whereas I still find it a little weak on the album).

Red right ankle is a good one...Chimbley Sweep is fun, but then again so is the Mary Poppins soundtrack, my dog goes crazy for both when we're in the car!

None of you kids would happen to have any tabs handy for this lovely band, now would ya? Tab, tabs, that's all anyone wants around here...sadly I am lazy and no exception.
