So if you like the Lovers, have you ever noticed the way all of the songs are never gender specific? Particularly the love songs....could Carolyn be of the gay persuasion.....? Or is metaphor the all important device?

I always thought that sometimes Carolyn was singing about herself in the second person, but I suppose it's possible. I've never really thought of Carolyn's sexuality as being an issue, but I suppose when you have lines like,
'If they would leave then you could cry
Your squid suit only isolates you
I wish I had their eyes
I'd make them see how beautiful it is'
it's certainly a possibility. But I'm not sure it's entirely my place to speculate on the sexuality of another. Besides, I've been known to be wrong before...
It's nice to see some good Lovers discussion, by the way! Two Lovers threads in a matter of days, by golly...
I might start one if I can think of anything to say...

It is a lame question, fruitless speculation, really just hope on my part....also it seems so very practiced: all of the lovers, childs, darlings in the lyrics, never directly addressing the gender of the beloved. It seems so very glaring, and I'm so very entranced.....

I actually noticed the same thing. I really enjoy it...Carolyn's music is so ethereal and dreamy that it works. Universal love. Spiritual love. Whatever you want to call it. She's so earnest she can pull it off!

I noticed it also. But I think it makes the songs apply to more people. Emotions are not gender specific.

...so hopefully we all realize that gender is a social construct, a tool wielded by a patriarchal society to subjugate its constituents. However it is imbedded in our language and for gender not to be used signifies a deliberate device, whose purpose we can but speculate upon.
