View Full Version : green imagination
new album is very much lacking in every area. this is not coming from some habitual nay-sayer, this is from someone who LOVED doss's contributions to the otc, adored the first LP, tolerated the early (ragged) SF live shows, and sincerely respects the man's talents. seems like doss has now given into the generic bar-band blandness his tours hinted at and has here produced an album that seriously jeopardizes his musical reputation. discuss!

piss off jml. everything i've heard off of the new album has done nothing but fill me with excitement to hear the rest. just those four or five songs would make the album worth while. bar band? maybe i'm going to the wrong bars.
piss off nuttin. the "psychedlic" production effects feel so forced and cheesy on this one and i just dont think the songwriting or group playing is as strong here as on anything he's done in the past. i've given it many listens and just can't get into it.

okay, wow, great, thanks. i've never, ever used the term "hater" for obvious reasons. but when you come onto a message board of a band just to say they suck then you're either a hater or a prick. if you can't say anything nice la;djslfk jldsfkj .

after reading that long post on the e6 section about harnk hating a band, i would like to formally apologize to jml. when it comes down to it i guess i really don't care. i'm sure you're not a prick. sorry.
just want to assure you that i am not on here specifically to diss doss (though it has a ring to it??). am a longtime fan of the man and his various musical incarnations, but was shocked to hear the new one and the big dropoff (to my ears) in overall quality. this doesn't change the affection i have for his OTC work or "age of the sun" (classic), it just means i hear the new one as a weird stumble. i generally love the guy's music, but i dont see him as infallible; the only reason i'm BOTHERING to post is because i care enough about the music to do so. whatever. check out "g.i." for yourselves and see what you think.

I don't think the "psychedelic production" is forced..in fact I think it's deliberately stripped down...and that child choir bit at the end of Run Runaway is beautiful. I love this album. But as a well adjusted man I can accept your views...afterall it's not like you were dissing Saturday looks Good To Me, which is a high crime on this board

No that you care, but I am no longer Harnk Eleanor Abartus. I will now be Harnk G Planetlegs

i really agree with jml on this one. its a pretty bad album, and i think the main reason why is everything does sound forced. i will give credit to the production. some of the tricks are amazing and well pulled off, but it seems like thats where all the time went into.
the music itself is okay, but it feels pre-planned, it doesn't feel like it just came out.
i usally don't complain about lyrics because i can't write lyrics worth a damn, but when you're rhyming we with be with reality, over and over its bad.
i guess the way i feel about is bill is concentrating too much on writing a good album instead of just a natural album, which usally makes a bad album. don't know if that makes sense.

That's weird, if it actually is bad.
Has there ever actually been an officially bad record released by Elephant 6? I can't think of any at all...

I consider the Thimble Circus album to be pretty bad. I absolutely loved Protest a Dark Anniversary, it's one of my favorite E6-related albums now--although on the first listen I was pretty indifferent, and it took a few listens before it grew on me. Now I listen to it endlessly. But some people really do hate Masters of the Hemisphere, and I don't see it.
I thought the first Sunshine Fix album was pretty good, but there was room for improvement. (I could have done without the last track.) "That Ole Sun," "Mr. Summer Day," and "Sail Beyond the Sunset" are fantastic. I'm looking forward to Green Imagination.

'Digging To China' alone made Age of the Sun worthwhile, to me.

Woooooow, I love that song too.
Does anyone know where I can find those lyrics?

did you hear the story of a historic sun
as it's spiraling around you
can't you hear the calling of a luminous moon
as it's heading down the hourglass
and i know if i could write you a hit song
then i could show you all the mountains
you could climb
and i know if i could write you a hit song
then i could show you all the clouds
that you could ride
did you know that we are just a part of it all
and it's bigger than whatever thing we are
see it in the pairing of the feet in the sand, as they dig away to china
and i know if i could write you a hit song
then i could show you all the stars
you could ride, etc.
you could ride, in the sky to, to the night ...
in the sky to, the sky to, the sky to, the sky to, the sky to the night...
and so on, and so on

I haven't yet bought the new album and have only listened to the 30-second clips available on iTunes (which, by the way, lists the artist of all the tracks as "The Sunshine Fix & Olivia Tremor Control" ... and lists Extraordinary/Ordinary as "The Sunshine Fix & Olivai Tremor Control" ??), but one thing that seems to strike me is the odd production of the vocals that I find somewhat annoying. I'm a sucker for vocals produced in the right way, and I think some of Doss's OTC songs were some of the best vocals ever. I also liked them quite a bit on Age of the Sun, especially in "That Ole Sun". But Doss seems to have started an affinity with ... well, the only word I can describe it with is annoying vocals. I first noticed it in the closing a-capella section of "See Yourself", which was the biggest thing that I didn't like about AotS. The annoying vocal concept seems to have grown (from what I can hear) on the new album. Odd.

okay folks, i just bought green animation yesterday. after hearing this album i can see where jml and all of the naysayers are coming from. however. i love the album. the first time around i was slightly dissappointed, probably because i was expecting age of the sun part two. this is something totally different from anything he's done, but it's far from typical. it's very odd and i'm liking it more and more every time i listen to it. and i'll listen to it plenty more. and enjoy the hell out of it. i wouldn't change a thing.
