according to pitchfork they sound like nmh. i checked them out and the do, in a way. although nothing will ever be able to beat nmh they are quite good. i really liked them. i guess, its worth checking them out if you are a nmh fan (Freekboy this is a MUST for you;))

i listened to some of it at the record store. it didn't seem to be anything special, but not that bad either. i wish i hadn't read that it 'sounds like nmh', maybe influenced , but it doesn't sound like it, nothing does. nothing. none. nothing ever will.

i heard one song by them before the pitchfork comparison. i liked it, but didn't make a note to find out more about them. tell me more about the record, does it get weird or is it a collection of folk-pop songs? etc...

Yeah I have the album, it's really good :)
And even though July, July! is a good song, I'd still recommend A Cautionary Song or Odalisque for starters, but that might just be me :)
Anyways, they kick ass, go get! :D

july, july isn't my favorite.i'd have to say that 'here, i dreamt i was an architect' is. then again its hard to pick one because the entire album is great (hmm...how many times have i said that?)

Yes, I agree. July July is probably the one I like the least, although it'd definitely good.
My favorites are Leslie anne levine, Here I dreamt I was an architect, and Odalisque.
They're all great! :D

''A Cautionary Song'' is truly a great song. Along with ''July, July!'', and ''Odalisque''. I like their album alot. I got it recently. Do they sound similar to Neutral Milk Hotel? No. Still great though.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but I am a little behind on the times, due to lack of funds...
Her Majesty is AWESOME! Thank you to those of you who over and over recommended this band... I can see the NMH comparison, but it is definetly different.. Its really good...
Wow...Thanks guys! :)

Who are they playing with? When and what venue? I've been meaning to get out of Mankato and catch a show, and it'd be nice to stop and see my friend Joe Greishaber who I haven't seen in a very long time and who is awesome.
[EDIT] I didn't realize what an old thread this was. Nevermind. Still, how was the show? I've yet to hear this band everyone's buzzing about.

i think they're okay, but nothing extraordinary, and definitely not near the beauty of nmh

I will agree that Meloy's voice is similar to Mangum's. Both possess a nasaly sound and express extreme emotion when they sing. A true Mangum fun, as I know everyone here is, could tell the difference and realize who's is the better one. I don't think that Meloy is trying to sound like anyone but himself. It probably sucks for him to be compared to someone else all the time. Meloy is not a poser. Meloy and Mangum, I love you both!

I saw them live and don't think Colin Meloy sounds like Jeff at all live. I think they also try to distance themselves from Neutral Milk Hotel. I remember reading somewhere how they appreciate the comparison but don't think it is accurate.

Nate, They were playing at the Triple Rock, but I didn't see the show as I had a family crisis and had to go to Detroit.

This is becoming a tired subject. Anyone else agree?

The Decemberists are NOT claiming to sound like NMH. Critics are saying that. And they are right.

The only NMH song that makes me see the Decemberists similarities is A Baby For Pree...

what i would like to know is why nervesandgel has so many pictures of haircuttingness. perhaps he skippingly haunts salons with his invisible phototo-capturing mechanism?

another classic example of why NMH fanatics are annoying people
"nothing will ever be as great as NMH"
Well I would pack it in if I thougt that.
If you feel that way you should give up on life altogether...seriously...go die somewhere
