I hope everyone had a good holiday season. I spent most of my holiday
working at Wuxtry covering everyone’s shifts so they could go home for Christmas and New Years. So I didn’t get to work on hardly any of the stuff I had planned during the break. Looking back 2007 was a big year for HHBTM with a new singles club getting off to a slow start, but a start all the same, an Instruments 7” tribute to Joy Division sold out almost overnight, another Athens PopFest, another CMJ showcase, and a showcase at Athfest. Casper & the Cookies stayed out on the road nearly half the year. We released debut albums by Patience Please, Red Pony Clock, Velcro Stars, Ideal Free Distribution, Fishboy, and follow ups by High Water Marks, Eux Autres. We released the debut EP by the Lolligags as well. The fourth
installment of Happy Happy Birthday to Me compilation was finally
released. We also released a 7” retrospective of Sarandon on CD. We had bands represented at the New York Popfest, Toledo Indiepop Festival, and the New England Popfest. Some of our bands made top ten lists of 2007, which always makes us happy to be acknowledged, but top ten list are so VH1 that it can be a bit scary getting listed on them. 2008 is looking to be even more hectic already. The singles club will be finished this year with nine more singles left to go. New albums by Keith John Adams, Bearsuit, Andy from Denver, Cars Can Be Blue, the Love Letter Band, Casper & the Cookies, the Lolligags, and Bunnygrunt are already being lined up. “ Karen Hater’s Club” by Bunnygrunt will be released on 10” this spring.
The follow up for the “No Parachute” DVD compilation will hopefully be completed as well in the upcoming months. HHBTM is also going to follow our hearts and take a huge risk by putting out a retrospective w/ the Ultramod Label of the Bar-B-Q Killers which is a big step for this little pop label. We are also doing another Athens PopFest in August, the website will launch soon with all the details.
Current News
Keith John Adams is working out the last of the custom songs, and the preorder for “Unclever” should ship near the middle of February due to Keith getting a cold and not being able to do vocals for a week. Bearsuit’s “OH:IO” should be back from the plant in the next two weeks with preorders shipping out shortly after eventhough the actual release date isn’t until the end of March. The Lolligags are going into the studio in two weeks to record with Jason Nesmith of Casper & the Cookies for their follow up EP. Cars Can Be Blue are also going to be in the studio at this time recording with Jeff Walls (Guadalcanal Diary / Woggles) & Joel Hatstat (Pegasuses XL) to record their follow up album "Doubly Unbeatable". The singles club second round is in process now. Tullycraft / Smittens getting near completion, Keith John Adams, James Husband, Patience Please, M Coast (now Andy from Denver),Ideal Free Distribution, and the Love Letter Band all have their songs in. Velcro Stars are completing their songs this weekend, and Red Pony Clock are recording their songs in one week. The next round should ship at some point in April. I have also started work on the bonus stuff for the initial 150 people who ordered the club. The bonus stuff will ship with the final round of singles in late fall 2008. I know the club is taking longer than expected, but lining up 26 bands to have songs in near the timelines you want is sometimes a bit tough, and things get moved around. In the end I just want to make sure it all looks and sounds good, so I don’t mind waiting for a pressing plant to get the single right. I know in the future to stick with not doing split singles. It is a lot of fun to get the singles in when they are done, but the process can make you want to scream at times. With that we have less than 30 subscriptions left for the singles club, so pick it up now before having to try to track one down in ebay in a year or so. Oh yeah, there is now a label blog www.happyhappybirthdaytome.blogspot.com . I hope you’ll drop by and check it out. I’ll be posting 4 days a week with videos, unreleased HHBTM stuff, out of print items, and new bands not on the label that have me excited.

I want to say a very big Thank You to anyone who bought HHBTM stuff this year, went to see a HHBTM band, or blog or wrote about us. It really means the world to everyone on the label and that works on the label to have your support. Oh yeah I’d like to welcome two new people to our little label family. Katie Miller who now runs the HHBTM label myspace & facebook for us, and helps with putting up posters in Athens, and Grant Grisamore who is working to help out Jason Jones with promotion, stuffs seven inch sleeves, and helped cleaning up the inventory.
Until February, Mike
