I have been listening to Of Montreal for around 6 years now. I really only had heard a few songs off of Aldhilis before Satantic Panic, and even then I only listened to the "singles" off the album. I got into them heavily off of Sunlandic Twins and Hissing Fauna. I have their full discography and I would usually just scan through it occasionally and never really listen to their older songs in full, yet still always say Sunlandic and Hissing Fauna were far superior. I stand corrected! Tonight I have listened to all of The Gay Parade, Cherry Peel, The Bedside Drama, The Bird WHo Continues... and a few more albums. I stand DUMBFOUNDED! This band held such a pop genious that has evolved into their new sound, and while the new sound is amazing, their older songs held such brilliance musically and lyrically that they will always stand to me as classics. I love the new albums for if they continued to reeat their old style it would be merely rehash, but the older albums were completely amazing and I was oh so wrong. Thank you!

I dunno, I've listened to their entire discography and I still think everything post-Satanic Panic is better than all their pre-Satanic Panic stuff. Maybe I just haven't listened to their earlier stuff enough because I have listened to their later stuff a LOT more, but... I just don't really get the appeal of the earlier stuff. Maybe it's just not my style. I'm definitely way more in line with Hissing Fauna/Icons than most of their other work.

I definetly feel where you are coming from, but i think i might like the older stuff a bit more. I mean, i dig electronic new stuff just as much as i like old school garage rock and pop. But theres something about the insecurity and innocence that kevin used to have that i can relate to more than the fear of having a kid or being split up with my wife. I love it all though!

I think he's just as insecure as he used to be-- I mean, Hissing Fauna and Icons are nothing but self-loathing and vulnerability, and I think that his fears of fatherhood/divorce are the symptoms rather than the cause. But what I find even more interesting is that although his basic personality has remained largely the same in terms of his insecurity, he's now trying harder to overcome it, due to his family situation, and I think that adds more interesting facets to his character.

Obviously I have spent way too much time thinking about this.

i like all the crazy chord changes of the early stuff. and the absurdist lyrics. the new stuff is more direct and still very catchy, it just doesn't hold up as long as the early material does (for me anyhow).

I think Bedside or The Gay Parade are my favorite older albums

what about coquelicot?!

in my opinion it's their best album. it's hard to grasp at first but it grows on you reallly fast.

coquelicot is great but its hard to listen to singles off that album, you kind of have to listen to the whole thing. Its not their best, I'd go with the gay parade, that is some krunk ass shit in that hizzle...foshizzle

Agreed.

I love the Pre-Satanic stuff, I really do, but I am a huge fan of the electronic, and I always have been (and will be). The Post Satanic stuff is so much more complex in a lot of ways, with a lot more going on in the songs, and a lot of heavy synth and such, while still holding to the signature of Montreal sound (whatever the Hell that may be--let's be honest here, Kevin is never static, but is somehow the only person who could pull off his sound, no matter how often it changes).

Anyway, I love it all, but the post Satanic stuff just fits my over-all tastes a lot better. I can't help it, I like what I like.

I have a hard time deciding if I like the older or newer stuff better. They are both completely different. I am so worried that the new album will be bad, because after hearing songs like "Pussy Freak" I am concerned.

For what it's worth I don't think Pussy Freak will be an actual song on the album, I think it's just a little diddy they've been using to open the shows. I could be wrong, though.

I admit being a little apprehensive abotu the next album too. I adore Hissing Fauna an inordinate amount so there's no way the next album could live up to it, but even so, the next album is looking a bit... odd. Although it might just take some getting used to. I've really warmed up to "Georgie's Lament" (on the gmail account) and Softcore is probably going to be awesome as well.

meh, i haven't listened to hissing fauna in probably a year, except for live shows. i'm fairly excited for the new album simply because it's new material and means more shows, but i doubt it'll hold a place in my heart like cherry peel or the gay parade or pretty much anything else pre-satanic does.

Yeah I dunno, this whole hyper-sexuality seems to be drowning out any meaning. I dunno, I mean I get that it is all about his self expression, but yet I feel it deprives the intimate emotions the prior albums hold. Songs like Wicked Wisdom and Softcore seem more funky yet shallow.

Are you kidding? I'm so excited for the new album! It sounds like it's going to be something different, something perhaps even difficult to grasp, and that's really exciting to me. I'm interested in seeing what new direction it's going to take, even if it's a radical change. I think I'm still going to love oM, no matter how far they drift from their original sound... After all, what kind of artist never changes or improves? A sucky one, that's what kind!
