The Magnetic Fields are fantastic. Distortion is kind of hard to get into...but I think I'm getting used to it and I'm loving it. 69 Love Songs is great as well. Haven't listened to all of i, but Stephen is definitely one of the best songwriters around. "Abigail, Belle of Kilronan" is my current favorite.

I don't know why but my favorite from 69 is The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side. Kind of a silly song but musically whimsical and, strangely, very heartfelt.

i think it's my all-time favorite song by merritt. for lack of a less sentimental word, it's beautiful.
i've tried recording versions of it twice in the past year or so, and it never sounds half as good as it does on the record.
EDIT: immediately after posting this, i felt compelled to add that "lovers from the moon", "take ecstasy with me", "meaningless", and "100,000 fireflies" could also easily be considered my favorite stephin merritt songs.

i think distortion is very good. It sounds like the raveonettes sounding like jesus and mary chain
my fav song on 69 love songs is "kiss me like you mean it"

whenever i've heard anyone describe the sound of distortion, they say "it's like ____________ meets the jesus and mary chain".
when i first heard "three way" i said "hey, it's like the go! team meets the jesus and mary chain."
the world should retire the variable and just agree that the album sounds like stephin merritt through a jesus and mary chain filter.

it's weird -- i liked pete & pete way before i liked either of these bands. then i got into the apples in stereo through a whole different source years later. then i rediscovered pete and pete, which got me into the magnetic fields.
i had no idea that the apples even had a song in pete and pete. and now that the last volume of the show isn't getting released on DVD, i don't know if i'll ever see that episode.

The Magnetic Fields have been just about my favorite band since age 12.
I wish they played a show somewhere accessible to me, though.

"I don't wanna get over you" is my favorite from 69 Love Songs; it's ingenious.

that's always been my favorite of 69 love songs. the whole song is comedy gold but especially:
or I could make a career of being blue
I could dress in black and read Camus
smoke clove cigarettes and drink vermouth
like I was 17
that would be a scream
but I don't want to get over you
"disortion" is much more like their 90's output. which is a cool thing. standard length albums from them just seem so disappointing now after the epic 69 love songs though. he spoiled me rotten w/ that album.
