Just got home from my first Neil concert. It was in Harlem @ the United Palace. My world was thoroughly rocked. That guy is fucking brilliant.
I've always loved him, but I'm mindblown at the moment.

I can't believe no one here has anything to say about Neil.

btw, his setlist was:
(ACOUSTIC) From Hank To Hendrix / Ambulance Blues / Sad Movies / A Man Needs A Maid / No One Seems To Know / Harvest / After The Gold Rush / Mellow My Mind / Love Art Blues / Cowgirl In The Sand / Out On The Weekend // (ELECTRIC) Mr. Soul / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / Dirty Old Man / Spirit Road / Bad Fog Of Loneliness / Winterlong / Oh, Lonesome Me / The Believer / No Hidden Path // (ENCORE) Cinnamon Girl / Tonight's The Night / Don't Cry No Tears

The sound was perfect. I went online to find out some more about it and found this...

ENJOY!

neil's who inspired me to learn the guitar. i learned every tune off unplugged when that came out on acoustic and then when i got better started jamming along to his jamming along to songs...i love a guitar player who doesn't have to meaningless shred, but play a few well placed notes and rock the fuck out.

beside's that, more than any other artist, neil's music has probably impacted me the most. can't say enough about him.

top five neil records:

everybody knows this is nowhere
after the gold rush
rust never sleeps
sleeps with angels
on the beach

amazing set list by the way.

Neil Young is the greatest thing ever. I can't say it enough. Better than chocolate, bourbon, or Will Cullen Hart.

Better than Dylan, if you asked me. Can't compare him to the Beatles/Stones.

Fave Neil Young records:
1. Tonight's the Night
2. On the Beach
3. After the Goldrush
4. Zuma
5. Harvest
6. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
7. American Stars & Bars
8. Rust Never Sleeps (POWDERFINGER!!!!!!!!)
9. Comes a Time
10. Silver & Gold

All you kids out there better recognize the genius that is Neil Young.

just curious. I know a lot of people think "tonight's the night" is his best, and I just don't see it. except for "come on baby let's go downtown". I can listen to that one over and over for hours and not get tired of it.
please explain. I'm hungry for knowledge.

my personal favorite is after the goldrush. hawks and doves isn't that great of an album but it has the song "little wing" which is a total stunner. if you haven't heard that track, find it. classic neal from the mid 70's (though the album wasn't released until the first of the following decade).

when I saw him last week, his song "No Hidden Path" was the stunner. He just jammed it out for what seemed to be 20-30 minutes. It was verse-chorus-solo-solo-solo-solo-verse-chorus-solo-solo-solo-solo-verse-chorus-solo-solo-solo-solo, etc but it never got old... well, not to me, at least. They also had crazy colored lights and it felt really psychedelic.
It blew my mind, completely.

Jefferoo, you like the Stones? Cause I got a Stones analogy.

Tonight's the Night, is like Exile on Main Street. Both records are about the feeling the music gives you, and less about the individual songs. Both records have incredible songs, more than that, they create a mood or a feel that is special and unique.

Tonight's the Night is totally cracked out. I can just imagine Neil and the Crazy Horse guys with Briggs, drinking tons of tequilla and doing shitloads of blow and then, as they've regained their sanity, they roll tape on "Mellow My Mind" or "Albequerque."

Tonight's the Night is a special record, and not just a collection of songs.

Tonight's The Night is such a raw and emotionally charged record, even by Neil's standards. It's some really soulful stuff. I feel like it's as purely Neil as Neil comes. No radio hits, no reverb or strings or fancy production, just Neil in your face with some of his closest musician friends.

Anyone heard Time Fades Away? That's a really great album from shortly before Tonight's the Night which has unfortunately never been released to CD.

Thanks for that, but I actually don't have any stones records (except "Through the Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2)"). I like the stones, but they are kinda hit or miss with me. I love paint it black and jumpin jack flash, but haven't ever picked up a record because a lot of their hits just haven't dung my bell.
Any recommendations on where to start? I hear Let It Bleed is good.

Anyone heard Time Fades Away?

Got it on LP. I guess Neil is quoted, saying it is his least favorite of his albums.

Jefferroo, you are a lucky man. You are about to fall in love with arguably the greatest rock n roll band of all time: The Rolling Stones

The Stones have been putting out records since 1963 so there's a lot to listen to. They've gone through a lot of phases, so its easy to get lost in their catalogue. However, since you are on the E6 board, I'm going to make some general assumptions about your musical tast. Therefore, here's what I suggest you do:

1. Check out their more melodic, pop records first. Get Aftemath, Between the Buttons, and Her Satanic Majesties Request.

2. Now that you've gotten accustomed to the band, you NEED to check out their next four, perfect LPs: Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile on Main Street. Buy them and listen to them in that order. No band in the history of recorded music has put out 4 more impeccable records in a row. These records are the sound of a rock n roll band on fire. Pure genius.

3. After, and only after you have memorized the 7 LPs listed above, you should check out the early bluesy stuff (December's Children, Out of Our Heads, or their later, still awesome, but not their pinnacle, records (Goat's Head Soup, Some Girls, Tattoo You).

Follow those steps and 2008 will be an amazing year for you. Seriously, you'll remember 2008 as the year you discovered the Stones as more than just another classic rock band. 1995 was that year for me, and I still remember it as such.
