after about a half year with a crappy cassette adapter for my Dell DJ, I've decided to purchase something that would actually sound good on my car stereo. the little cassette worsens the quality by about 2x.
should I get an fm transmitter, or an adapter? I'm having trouble finding adapters that are compatible with my dell, but I hear the fm transmitters are pretty unreliable.
any recommendations would be great. :D

That is by far the happiest face I've ever seen on this board.
Doesn't the Dell DJ have a socket for line-out?

There is a headphone jack and an insert for it's usb/charger, which is unique to the dell dj. but the only place I suspect would produce a custom dell car adapter (dell.com) doesn't provide anything. queer, I know.
that's why I'm opting for something through the headphone jack.

DON'T GET AN FM TRANSMITTER. THEY ALL SUCK. Get a new car stereo that has an auxiliary input before you waste any money on a transmitter.
The headphone jack will probably be better than a dedicated line output that probably has a fixed gain. With a headphone output you can crank it or dial it back before it hits the amplifier. Makes all the difference in the world.
