View Full Version : New UK-based fan - one gig, two albums under the belt

Hi, I know I'm taking my life into my own hands by admitting to being a 'new' fan on this forum. I've been on the British Sea Power forum for nearly four years now, and I am well aware of how newcomers can sometimes be received! I'm happy to take the blows, and know I'll have to earn my spurs.

Anyway, I live in London, England, and only recently heard of Montreal, when they were recommended to me by a friend. So I bought Hissing Fauna and adored it, and saw the band last week in London and had my socks blown off by them! Bought Sunlandic Twins at the same gig, and that has had the same reaction. I've since trawled the web /youtube etc trying to learn more about the band and Kevin, and have become increasing fascinated.

I just wanted to say 'hi' properly anyway, and wondered if there are any other UK fans on here? And what order older fans might suggest I should approach the rest of the oM catalogue?

I would get "Gay Parade" next. It is a lot different than what you have heard by them, but the masterpiece in my opinion. Then maybe Aldhils, Cherry Peel, Satanic Panic, Coquelicot, and so on and so forth. You will really hear it all eventually once you start listening and become obsessed, so it's all just a matter of time. Welcome to the boards, and don't worry about abuse, we are all pretty nice. Watch out for Harnk though, he will rip you a new one, but it is all out of love, just hidden very well. Feel free to ask any questions, this is, luckily, a very knowledgeable community, and most are eager to share that knowledge.

WELCOME!
we're all tolerant 'round here... sorta.
I'm a much bigger fan of their "old" stuff.
Def get Aldhils, Couquelicot, Gay Parade and Bedside Drama.
I'm also a big fan of If He Is Protecting Our Nation, Then Who Will Protect Big Oil, Our Children?

Hi. Shame for discovering a band is silly. Welcome. I'm a real asshole. Stay clear of me.

Coquelicot is brilliant. Not to say the rest of their work isn't, it's just brilliance on top of brilliance.

Of course when you get a bunch of people together recommending their favorite albums on a music message board, you're going to hear everyone suggest everything

But Satanic Panic in the Attic is most like the two albums that you already have. Getting right into the old material might be a little weird since it really isn't anything like you've heard before from the band. In my opinion, I'd work backwards at first and get Satanic Panic and then Aldhils Arboretum. After that, you'll probably be ready for the old stuff.

I suppose you don't have the Icons, Abstract Thee EP? If you really like Hissing Fauna I'd say get Icons before you travel on to the rest of the stuff, just because it's a pretty sure bet you'll like Icons too. "No Conclusion" is basically one of the most amazing songs I've ever heard, it's worth the whole EP just for that song. It's like all of Hissing Fauna's anguish packed into 9 minutes and 42 seconds of non-stop psycho-pop. Definitely look into it.

Also, you don't have Satanic Panic In the Attic either, do you? That would also be the next albumto get, it's closest in sound to Hissing Fauna and Sunlandic Twins as you'll get in the rest of their catalog. I'm not much a fan of their pre-Satanic Panic stuff so I'll leave it up to other people for the recommendations as far as that goes. But as for myself, I'd say Icons, Abstract Thee EP and then Satanic Panic In The Attic.

i agree with shiny, and after aldhil's you should go straight to the gay parade or cherry peel.

You probably heard a Satanic Panic song or two at their live show, also... since they still play a handful of songs from it.

I'd work your way back from Sunlandic Twins. So next check out Satanic Panic in the Attic, then Aldhils Arboretum, Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies and so on.
Happy listening =]

Ha! brilliant! I could really start anywhere then, if I take a balanced approach to filtering all your comments! I think I will seek out Icons next though. My favourite song on Hissing Fauna is The past is a Grotesque Animal by the way....and the acoustic version that is up on youtube is absolutely sublime - one of the most devastatingly beautiful things I've ever heard.

I've also heard Tim, I wish you were born a girl. That's off Cherry Peel, no? I love that song, so Cherry Peel may be next on the list!

Thank you for the warm welcome, one and all! You'll be seeing me around!

your best next choice is as others have said before, Satanic Panic and then Cherry Peel and The Gay Parade, then the rest. I'd save Cocquelicot for last, since it's their weirdest and one of their best, so it's the Grand Desert after the meal

coquelicot is by far their greatest achievement.
all downhill since (but still better than all, or most, other bands).
